Cottage Grove relies on dedicated volunteer members of City Advisory Commissions to provide input and make decisions that directly impact the growth of the city and the quality of life of its residents. 

The city greatly benefits from the diverse skills and backgrounds of its commission members, including the unique perspective of the youth that serve on several of the commissions.

If you are interested in applying to be a volunteer member of any of the City Advisory Commissions, download the application, fill it out and return it to City Hall,12800 Ravine Parkway, Cottage Grove.  Forms are also available at City Hall.

Please note that not all commissions have current openings. Applications for all Advisory Commissions are accepted on a continuous basis and kept on file for one year.

Number of members

  • Planning Commission and Environmental Commission - 9 members
  • Advisory Committee on Historic Preservation - 8 members
  • All other commissions - 7 members

Youth seats: In addition, Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources Commission, and Public Services Commissions each have two additional seats reserved exclusively for youth (ages 18 or under) who are residents of the community.


Each member is appointed by the City Council for two year terms, except the Planning Commission. The Planning Commission is appointed for three year terms. Each term begins March 1.

The term of office for youth seats shall be one year from the date of appointment, renewable for a second one year term by action of the City Council. More information can be found in the City Code.

Appointments to fill a vacancy shall be only for the unexpired portion of such vacancy. Filling an unexpired term of one year or less shall not be counted against the term limit.

Member qualifications

Each commission member must be a resident of the City.

It is the goal of the city to have one senior citizen (65 or older) on the Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources, and Public Services Commissions.

The Advisory Committee on Historic Preservation shall be persons with demonstrated interest and/or expertise in historic preservation. If available, at least two members of the committee shall be preservation related professionals who meet the professional qualifications standards established by the United States secretary of interior and the state historic preservation office. The historic preservation officer, along with representatives of the planning commission and the parks, recreation and natural resources commission, shall be ex officio nonvoting members. The Washington County Historical Society shall also be invited to appoint a representative to the Committee who shall serve in an ex officio nonvoting capacity. Rules of procedure

Each commission shall adopt a set of rules to govern its meetings and procedures. The rules may be amended from time to time, but: a) only at a regular meeting of the commission, b) only with the affirmative vote of at least five (5) members, and c) only after the proposed amendment has received consideration for at least two (2) consecutive regular meetings. Proxy voting shall be prohibited.
